9-year-old Valeria from Ukraine found dead in Germany - photo

Police in the city of Debeln, Saxony, have confirmed that the Ukrainian girl, who went missing last week, is dead. She was the victim of a crime that is being investigated as a murder.

Chemnitz prosecutor's office spokeswoman, Ingrid Burghart said that the body found on Tuesday in Debeln, Saxony, belonged to nine-year-old Ukrainian Valeria, who had been missing for several days. A murder investigation is underway. However, there is no evidence of a sexual crime.

According to the Head of the Chemnitz Criminal Investigation Department, Mandy Kürschner, the lifeless body was found on Tuesday afternoon at about 2:30 p.m. in the forest "far from the forest paths, deep in the forest understory" between between the settlements of Hermsdorf and Mahlitzsch. The Debeln district of the city of Hermsdorf in Central Saxony is just four kilometers from the house. The time of death cannot yet be determined.

The nine-year-old girl was last seen on June 3, on her way to school. But she never made it. The school did not inform her mother about her absence. As a result, her disappearance was noticed only in the afternoon, when she did not return home. More than 400 police officers from Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt were looking for the girl.

Over the past few days, officers went on numerous missions, including searching through the Mulde River and questioning local residents. In addition, private search teams have been formed in the city of about 24,000 people. On Tuesday afternoon, police found her lifeless body.
