Tortured confessions - Ukrainian volunteer abducted from Melitopol is sentenced to 14 years in Russia

Ukrainian volunteer Yaroslav Zhuk, who was abducted in Melitopol in 2022, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the Russian Federation.

This was reported by the Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration (RMA), Ivan Fedorov.

"14 years in prison for a 'confession' extracted by torture and abuse. This is the result of the trial organized by Russia over Yaroslav Zhuk from Melitopol," he wrote.

According to the verdict, Zhuk was found guilty of committing an act of international terrorism and sentenced to 14 years in prison, with the first 4 years in prison and the rest of the term in a maximum security colony.

In the video posted online by the Russians, the volunteer "confesses" that on June 17, 2022, he allegedly "committed an assassination attempt on the director of the city's education department, Olena Shapurova," as well as involvement in the "guerrilla movement led by the Security Service of Ukraine."

Later, human rights activists released a statement by Zhuk, who said that he had been beaten, tortured with electric shocks, kept in a basement with a bag over his head, and forced to write a confession.
