Teacher Yaryna Klyuchkovska criticized the media for choosing the headline under which they wrote about Natalia Shakhovska's victory in the elections for rector of the National University "Lviv Polytechnic".
She commented on this topic on her Facebook page.
Klyuchkovska instead decided to offer several alternative options:
- "AI researcher becomes rector of Lviv Polytechnic"
- "The head of the "Internet of Things Laboratory" became the rector of Lviv Polytechnic University"
- "The head of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies became the rector of Lviv Polytechnic."
Regarding this, she writes:
"So many possible headlines! And yet even very reputable media outlets write: "A woman has become the rector of Lviv Polytechnic"... Will the day ever come when, in the public consciousness, our achievements will become more important than our sexual characteristics? No, it's really cool that a woman headed a leading technical university. But she headed it not because she is a woman."
At the end, she admitted that she dreams of a time when such headlines disappear along with societal gender biases.
As a reminder, "Apostrophe" spoke in more detail about Natalia Shakhovska, Doctor of Technical Sciences , Professor, Founder and Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems, for whom more than 55% of voters voted in the elections for the rector of the National University "Lviv Polytechnic".
