Who is Natalia Shakhovskaya and what is her historical achievement?

Natalia Shakhovska, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Founder and Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems, won the election for rector of the National University "Lviv Polytechnic".

This was reported by the ZAXID.NET publication.

Over 55% of voters voted for Shakhovska. She became the first woman to hold the position of rector of Lviv Polytechnic.

Natalia Shakhovska was born in 1978 in Lviv. In 2000, she graduated from Lviv Polytechnic with a degree in "Intelligent Decision-Making Systems". In 2006, she defended her PhD thesis, and in 2012, she received a Doctor of Technical Sciences degree. In 2013–2018, she was the Dean of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies of Lviv Polytechnic. Since July 2018, she has been the Head of the newly established Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems. Since September 2024, she has held the position of Director of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies.

Her research interests include big data analysis, intelligent decision support systems, data integration and aggregation methods, uncertainty management methods, and distributed information systems design. Thanks to her efforts and leadership, Lviv Polytechnic has become a center of innovation, where technologies that have the potential to change the world are being developed.

Shakhovska is one of the most cited scientists in the world. She is the author of over 300 scientific papers and textbooks that help students and scientists better understand complex technological processes. She actively promotes the development of artificial intelligence and information technologies in Ukraine. In particular, she is a co-organizer of the annual international scientific and practical conference "Computer Sciences and Information Technologies" (CSIT), the materials of which are indexed in the scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Sciences. In addition, she organizes the International Workshop "Informatics and Data-Driven Medicine" (IDDM), the materials of which are also indexed in scientometric databases.

Under Shakhovskaya's leadership, unique educational programs were created, developed jointly with the IT cluster, which provided students with in-depth knowledge of machine learning, natural language processing, and other areas of AI.
