Xi Jinping meets with Putin: main statements following the talks

During Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping made it clear that ties between the two countries remain strong and based on trust.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

Xi Jinping noted that his nation is "ready to work with Russia as a good neighbour, friend and partner with mutual trust". He added that he was prepared to "consolidate the friendship between the two peoples for generations to come".

Putin noted that cooperation between Russia and China "is one of the main stabilizing factors in the international arena".

"Together we stand for principles of equality, fairness and a world order that reflects the multipolar reality and a world order based on international law,'' Putin said.

It is noted that in recent weeks, the United States has stepped up warnings to Chinese banks and exporters about the consequences if they help strengthen Russia's military capabilities.

In December, the US Treasury Department announced that it would impose secondary sanctions on banks that facilitate deals in which Russia buys semiconductors, ball bearings and other equipment needed for its armed forces, even if they are not aware that they are doing so.

Despite growing economic ties, China's exports to Russia in April were down 13% from a previous year, the second straight month of annual declines, according to Chinese customs data.

Russian media reported that in late March, Chinese banks began blocking payments from companies in Russia that purchase components for electronics assembly.

Earlier, Apostrophe reported that Putin said he was ready for peace talks.
