North Korean soldiers cross the border with South Korea

On Tuesday, June 18, the North Korean military crossed the border into South Korea. South Korean soldiers fired warning shots, forcing the DPRK military to return to their side of the border. This is the second time such a border violation has been recorded in less than two weeks.

This is reported by Yonhap with reference to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

It is noted that on June 18, North Korean soldiers working in the Demilitarized Zone, which separates the DPRK and South Korea, again crossed the territory of South Korea. Later the South Korean military conducted warning broadcasts and fired warning shots, prompting the North Korean soldiers to return to their side of the border.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reports that "around 20 to 30 North Korean soldiers carrying work tools crossed the Military Demarcation Line within the DMZ in the central section of the border" The crossing was recorded around 8:30 a.m. South Korea's military made warning broadcasts and fired warning shots. Afterward, the DPRK soldiers returned to their territory. No further activity was observed.

A JCS official said that the incident seems to have been accidental. However, it is known that this illegal crossing was the second violation of the border by the North Korean military in less than two weeks. A similar incident occurred on June 9.
