The U.S. Congress approves bill barring any president from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO. Now it will require the approval of the Senate or an Act of Congress.
This is reported by The Hill.
It is noted that the initiators of the innovation were Democratic Senator from Virginia Tim Kaine and Republican Senator from Florida Marco Rubio.
The provision underscores Congress’s commitment to the NATO alliance that was a target of former President Trump’s ire during his term in office.
“NATO has held strong in response to Putin’s war in Ukraine and rising challenges around the world,” The legislation “reaffirms U.S. support for this crucial alliance that is foundational for our national security. It also sends a strong message to authoritarians around the world that the free world remains united," Kaine explained.
According to Senator Rubio, Trump's anti-NATO rhetoric weakens the unity and force of purpose of the alliance. He said many in the Senate are concerned that he would abandon the U.S. commitment to the mutual defense pact of the alliance or withdraw the U.S. completely.
We will add that the next election of U.S. President will be held on November 5, 2024. Former US President Donald Trump leads among the presidential candidates from the Republican Party. The closest followers of Trump are former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
