U.S. court bars Trump from presidential ballot

Colorado Supreme Court decided to bar former President Donald Trump from participating in state’s presidential primary ballot of the Republican Party in 2024. The court referred to the Article of the US Constitution, which prohibits officials who participated in "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" from holding public office, but the former President can appeal this decision.

This is reported by CNN.

The court ruling was based on Donald Trump's role in the events of January 6, 2021, when a crowd of his supporters invaded the Capitol building in an attempt to change the results of the presidential election, according to which his opponent Joe Biden won.

"President Trump incited and encouraged the use of violence and lawless acts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power," the judges said.

Colorado Supreme Court court placed its ruling on hold until January 4, anticipating an appeal to the US Supreme Court.

The court stayed its decision until Jan. 4, or until the U.S. Supreme Court rules on the case. Colorado officials say the issue must be settled by Jan. 5, the deadline for the state to print its presidential primary ballots.

Colorado judges said the Colorado Secretary of State "will be obliged to include Trump's name in the 2024 presidential primary until he receives the Supreme Court's decision." However, even if he remains on the primary ballot and wins the Republican Party primary, he could still be disqualified in the general election.

Currently, there are six Republicans and three Democrats out of nine U.S. Supreme Court judges. However, three of the six Republicans were appointed under President Bush, while the other three were appointed during Trump's cadence.
