Poland blocks hundreds of illegal migrants at Belarus border: security forces use tear gas against migrants

Poland says it has repelled attempts by migrants to enter the country at its eastern border with Belarus, warning that thousands more were on the way. Numerous video footages on the media show hundreds of people near a barbed-wire border fence, which some tried to force their way through.

The Polish government called a crisis meeting on Monday and deployed 12,000 troops to the region.

Poland has accused Belarus of pushing the migrants towards the border, describing it as hostile activity.

Earlier, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia say there's been a surge in the number of people trying to enter their countries illegally from Belarus in recent months. Many of them have come from the Middle East and Asia.

The European Union has accused Belarus's authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko of facilitating the influx in retaliation against sanctions, while Poland build a razor-wire fence on the border.

Conditions for migrants on the border are hostile to the point of being deadly. On Tuesday, November 9, Poland has warned of a possible "armed" escalation on its border with Belarus, fearing its neighbour may try to provoke an incident with hundreds of migrants seeking to cross into the EU.

Currently, extra troops have been deployed after desperate crowds tried to cut a barbed-wire border fence. As many as 4,000 people are now caught up in the migrant crisis on Poland's eastern border, officials in Warsaw say. Poland says it is shutting a major border crossing at Kuznica.

Poland, the European Union and NATO say Belarus is orchestrating the problem, a claim denied by its disputed leader.

The head of Poland's national security department, Stanislaw Zaryn, said the migrants were under the control of Belarusian armed units. "Belarus wants to cause a major incident, preferably with shots fired and casualties," deputy foreign minister Piotr Wawrzyk said earlier.

The Belarus defence ministry rejected the Polish statements as unfounded and unsubstantiated, and accused Warsaw of violating agreements by moving thousands of troops to the border.

Russia meanwhile praised its Belarusian ally's "responsible" handling of the border row and said it was watching the situation closely.
