On Sunday night, January 21, a large asteroid was seen in the sky above Berlin, which according to experts' calculations fell in the west of the German capital. The celestial body was detected even before entering the Earth's atmosphere, which allowed to capture it on video and calculate the location of the fall.
About it reports DW.
According to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), the meteoroid with a diameter of about a meter was discovered by Hungarian astronomer Christian Szarnecki. The celestial body was first given the tentative name Sar2736, but is now listed as 2024 BX1. It has been possible to detect a meteoroid before it burns up in the Earth's atmosphere only a few times in recent years.
According to calculations of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), the meteorite was expected to fall near the community of Nennhausen in the state of Brandenburg. Police said they had not received any reports of damage caused by the falling celestial body. People have already started arriving to search for the remains of the asteroid.
"Apostrophe" wrote earlier that five asteroids will approach the Earth in the near future.
