The day has come: the EU has called for the deprivation of Hungary's voting rights

Belgium has called to deprive Hungary of its voting rights in the EU. Representatives of this particular country recently issued a cynical statement about the Ukraine Peace Summit.

This position was expressed by Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib in an interview with Politico on June 2.

According to her, the country wants to express no confidence under Article 7 of the EU Treaty.

"We have a Europe that is making difficult headway, with unfortunately some states, one state in particular, increasingly adopting a transactional, blocking and veto attitude. I think we need to have the courage to make decisions: go right to the end of Article 7, activate Article 7 right to the end, which provides for the end of the right of veto," the politician explained.

She emphasized that now is the moment of truth when EU members will either fulfill their responsibilities or continue to implement mechanisms that do not work. Hadja Lahbib called for a choice, noting that the first option requires political courage and willpower from governments.

"If we go all the way with this mechanism, it must work. If it doesn’t work, we have to reform it. That’s the future of the European Union," explained Hadja Lahbib.

It is worth noting that by the end of this year, Hungary is to take over the presidency of the EU Council, which will give it even more power to influence the EU's agenda and priorities. However, this will jeopardize the provision of military assistance to Ukraine, the imposition of sanctions against Russia, and Ukraine's accession to NATO.

Earlier, Apostrophe wrote that Hungarian PM Viktor Orban congratulated Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on his victory in the presidential election.
