The defense industry is coming back to life: what Ukraine can produce in mass quantities and what has been lost forever

Ukraine's defense industry is currently unable to compensate for the supply of weapons that our Western allies, including the United States, are delaying.

This is stated in the material of Apostrophe.

Like most sectors of the domestic economy, the defense industry has been severely affected by the war.

"The facilities for the construction and repair of tanks, which were based in Kharkiv, have been completely lost. And it will most likely not be possible to restore these production facilities, since they used unique equipment, which often existed in one copy," military expert Mykhailo Zhyrokhov told Apostrophe. - "In addition, there may not be a need for this, since Ukraine produced Soviet-era tanks, for which many components were supplied from Russia and other post-Soviet countries".

However, military production is slowly coming back to life. Although, for a country at war, especially one with a strong production potential, it is too slow.

"We can hardly talk about switching the economy to a military mode," says Zhyrokhov. - "I can't think of an example where a civilian enterprise would switch to manufacturing military products. The production of military ammunition - body armor, helmets, etc. - is growing. But this is also happening at specialized enterprises that were originally designed for this."

According to him, we can talk about an increase in the production of armored vehicles.

"Before the full-scale invasion, it was actually a garage production. Now it is scattered across different regions and has increased. However, it is still too early to talk about mass production," the expert says. - "Domestic Bohdana self-propelled artillery systems and Neptune missiles are also produced, but in small quantities."

The most dynamic development in Ukraine today is the production of unmanned systems. However, in this sector, we still cannot fully cover the needs of the army.
