German counterintelligence chief says Russia increased intelligence activity in Germany

On June 15, 2021, the Constitutional Protection Report 2020 was published by Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer and Federal Constitutional Protection President Thomas Haldenwang.

The Constitutional Protection Report informs about the nature and extent of anti-constitutional developments. Thus, it was noted in the report that there is a current threat imposed by the activities of Russian hackers.

Such attacks are carried out by Russian special services in order to obtain all kinds of secret information, which will help to extend Russian political influence on local society and commit information sabotage within the state. At the same time, it was noted in the report that the hacker attacks are carried out both from the territory of the Russian Federation and by legal residents based in Germany. Attacks are also carried out by hackers illegally recruited by Russian intelligence.

Additionally, President of Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwanghas claimed that the activity of Russia’s intelligence service in Germany has reached the Cold War-era level.

"We see that Russia has increased its activity dramatically," he said in an interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday. "Today’s level was seen only during the Cold War era." In his words, Moscow’s methods are allegedly "becoming coarser and the means - more brutal." He recalled the 2019 murder of a Georgian national in Berlin. The German side claims that Russia was behind the incident, despite Moscow’s repeated refutations.

Haldenwang also said he though right-wing extremism was the most serious threat to Germany’s democracy and security. He noted tat his countries special services were concerned over the spread of radical propaganda on the internet.
