Known since the times of Kyivan Rus': how Lvivska Square in Kyiv looked at the beginning of the last century, photo

Historians and tour guides have published archive photos of Lvivska Square in Kyiv, made in the early XX century.

A tour guide Kyrylo Stepanets recalled the history of Lvivska Square on his Telegram channel.

According to him,Lvivska Square is one of the oldest in Kyiv. This location is known since the time of Kyivan Rus'.

"The surrounding area from ancient times formed a complex unit of fortifications, in particular the Western and Jewish Gates. The western entrance to the city was located there, and after the invasion of the Mongol Tatars in 1240, life on the square was suspended, because almost everything was destroyed " , Stepanets continued in his Telegram channel.

The tour guide also added that Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was previously located on Lvivska Square. A large Sinnyy Rynok was also organized at this location.

The history of Lvivska Square was also recalled by the famous researcher and local historian Valeriy Lysenko. According to him, the square received its present name in 1869. It was named in honor of Lvivsky Gate of the Old Kyiv Fortress, which was located on this place in the XVII-XVIII centuries.

The area of Lvivska Square was formed at the time of princes on the ancient road from Asia to Europe. This was the western entrance to ancient Kyiv. Life on Lvivska Square stopped after the invasion of the Mongol-Tatars in 1240. The Sinnyy Rynok, which was organized there, was moved to another location only in the 1950s.

"Our land is wrapped in legends and full of archaeological treasures. Many interesting local buildings of the XIX-XX centuries preserve the memory of numerous outstanding people - architects, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and artists.", - added Lysenko, commenting on the history of Kyiv.

Lvivska Square is located in Shevchenkivskyi District of Kyiv. The location is between Velyka Zhytomyrska, Sichovykh Striltsiv, Bulvarno-Kudriavska, and Yaroslaviv Val Streets. In 1939, the square was named Sinna, which came from the Sinnyy Rynok. The historical name was returned to Lvivska Square in 1944.
