Michael McKinley, a senior advisor to the US Secretary of State and a well-known diplomat, resigned after the agency's diplomats were obliged to address Congress regarding President Donald Trump's negotiations with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Before his resignation, McKinley made a public statement that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was "unable to protect his employees" in the political confrontation on the "Ukrainian case" between the US Democratic Party and Trump's team.
The US State Department diplomat was responsible for South American countries Venezuela and Mexico, as well as Afghanistan. Thus, the scandal did not directly concern him and he had no obligation to testify in Congress.
Prior to that, McKinley had expressed concerns about the reasons for the dismissal of the US ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, who allegedly "failed to demonstrate her loyalty" to Trump.
Before joining the US State Department, Michael McKinley had been the US ambassador to various countries for 30 years.
As Apostrophe reported earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the head of the House Intelligence Oversight Committee, Adam Schiff, had changed Trump's expressions in his phone conversation with President Zelensky to denigrate the US leader. Trump called on Schiff to resign and called him a "swindler".
