France has exactly such a unit: what Macron's statement about sending troops to Ukraine means

On Monday, Feb. 26, at a Summit on support of Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that Western troops could be sent to Ukraine. He added that he would do everything necessary to prevent Russia from winning this war. In addition, France even has special units of the Foreign Legion "to deal with issues of a different kinds."

Military expert Oleh Zhdanov expressed his opinion on the possible sending of foreign military units to Ukraine on the air of Apostrophe TV.

He notes that in the context Macron was talking about, NATO was not mentioned at all:

"As I understand it, the issue of sending troops directly to Ukraine was considered - as they provide us with arms and ammunition."

Zhdanov notes that French President suggested sending troops in the future:

"it was emphasized there that it was not today or tomorrow. And I didn't hear anywhere that it was connected with the conduct of hostilities."

Therefore, he suggests that European leaders are most likely considering such options, "perhaps as part of these security obligations that they undertake for the post-war transition period."

However, the military expert does not believe that anyone will want to become a participant in this war: "Until the war is over, it is unlikely that any country will want to become another participant in this war."

When asked if France could send its own troops to Ukraine, Zhdanov said the following:

"France even has units that it sends to hot spots to deal with issues of a different kinds. This is the Foreign Legion."

The expert adds that we should not count on this, but at the same time adds that "the probability of this, at least a little, but exists."

"In my opinion, we may see units of the French Foreign Legion here during the transition period between the victory and joining NATO," Zhdanov said.

Earlier we reported that Alliance made a firm statement regarding whether NATO troops will be sent to Ukraine.
