EU members may deprive Hungary of the right to vote for approving an agreement on a €50bn aid package for Ukraine in 2024-2027.
About this reports the Financial Times.
Some officials in Brussels propose applying the punishment procedure under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union 2007 for a breach of the rule of law, which could lead to the suspension of voting rights.
The publication notes that this step could be blocked by any other EU member state, but the change of government in Poland shows that Hungary no longer has a guaranteed protector.
If it fails, the 26 other EU members will be able to reach an agreement on aid to Ukraine separately, although this will take time.
According to the publication's source, an EU official, Hungary may create more problems, but will not be able to prevent EU countries from providing money to Ukraine.
Earlier, Martin Dvořák, Minister for European Affairs of the Czech Republic said that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was a Trojan horse destroying European unity and protecting Russian interests.
European Parliament Member from Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė also called to deprive Hungary of the right to vote in the EU.
As reported earlier, Orbán left the room during the European Council meeting, which allowed the Summit to open accession negotiations with Ukraine. However, he blocked the review of the long-term budget of the EU aid program of €50 billion to Ukraine.
