Donald Trump has won a convincing victory in the first Republican presidential primary held on Monday in Iowa.
This is reported by Reuters.
According to Edison Research, after 95% of the votes were counted, Trump received 51% support. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 45, has unexpectedly pulled into second place, he has 21%. Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has 19%. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, known for his anti-Ukrainian statements, received less than 8% of the vote and dropped out of the race. He supported the candidacy of Donald Trump.
Thus Donald Trump cemented his status as the clear frontrunner among the nominees for the Republican Party's presidential election in 2024. Polls had shown Trump as the clear leader in Iowa for months, but the magnitude of his victory was overwhelming.
Trump's result reflects his popularity among Republican voters - even after two impeachments, his role in storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and despite 91 criminal indictments. Nearly two-thirds of voters supported his false claims of election fraud, saying they did not believe Joe Biden won the presidency legitimately. More than 60% said Trump would still be able to serve as president even if he was convicted of a crime.
